Obamacare is losing support of Unions

April 20, 2013

johnny_automatic_rooferThere is hope for those of that understand how bad the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is for workers and business owners. For quite some time many Unions have grumbled about Obamacare and have raised concerns about how their workers will be impacted. Unfortunately they have not been overly vocal about their concerns with Obamacare. That changed this last week. The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers has released an official press release speaking against Obamacare.

Here are a couple of passages from this press release I find most relevant:

In the rush to achieve its passage, many of the Act’s provisions were not fully conceived, resulting in unintended consequences that are inconsistent with the promise that those who were satisfied with their employer sponsored coverage could keep it.

This has often been a complaint for those of us against Obamacare. While Obamacare is well-intended, it was pushed through too fast for anyone to truly understand the short and long-term consequences. Heck, even a primary architect of Obamacare admitted this last week that enacting provisions of the legislation will be a “huge train wreck“.

These provisions jeopardize our multi-employer health plans, have the potential to cause a loss of work for our members, create an unfair bidding advantage for those contractors who do not provide health coverage to their workers, and in the worst case, may cause our members and their families to lose the benefits they currently enjoy as participants in multi-employer health plans.

Finally people are waking up and realizing the promise that “your current benefits won’t be touched” was a political white-lie. All I can say is that a lie is a lie, even if it is done for ‘the right reasons’.

I refuse to remain silent, or idly watch as the ACA destroys those protections.

Now if more Unions will spend their political power making such statements we can see real progress in this country.
