Which office should Stace run for?

July 11, 2013

ryanlerch_thinkingboy_outlineTwo days ago South Dakota District 19 State Representative Stace Nelson announced the formation of an exploratory committee to run for federal office. As I said before I find this to be great news for liberty-loving individuals. However since this exploratory committee is to “run for federal office” it is still unclear as to what Stace will do. I typically don’t get involved in (or blog about) this aspect of politics, but thought it would be worth trying with Stace.

Since the announcement is for federal office there are two paths he is clearly looking at in the 2014 election: US Senate or US House. The US Senate seat is being vacated by Democrat Tim Johnson. Most policos have basically given this seat to the Republican Party in 2014. I not only agree with that assessment, but think the current Democrat candidate is a ‘must defeat’ because Rick Weiland began his campaign attacking the First Amendment. It has also been said by many sources that former SD Governor Mike Rounds is guaranteed the Senate seat. It is true that the $9 million Mike says he will be raising is hard to beat. However there is no great love of Rounds from the conservative wing of the Republican Party and there are at least two other R candidates going into the primary. This is the route I am sure many are telling Stace to stay away from. I believe the Rounds team will stop at nothing to destroy Mr Nelson in the primary process.

Does that mean Stace should stay away from the Senate race though? Will a run against three or four other R make for a nasty primary that would leave the person with the most money standing? I’m not so sure. I don’t this route is as un-winnable as it seems. So far the attacks put against Stace have done nothing but make him gain more support. Stace might just be the kind of candidate that can actually put a good fight against Rounds. I don’t think it would be an easy fight for Stace, but I do believe it is a winnable fight.

The other federal option is the House of Representatives where Kristi Noem is up for reelection. Part of me wants Stace to run against Kristi just because she needs a good primary fight before the general election. This Tea Party hopeful has really fallen short of standing up for small government and lower taxes. Her fight for the pork-filled farm bill is proof of this. Somehow though I think this battle will be tougher for Stace than it would appear to be. I’ve talked to many about Rep Noem. There seems to be a lot of consensus that she is falling short of expectations; but not as much dislike as I thought there would be due to her legislative shortcomings. This is a race that Stace can win, but just has to expect more of a fight than a House primary would normally give.

So which race should Stace go with? I think Stace should look at the Governors office in 2018. Four years experience in the US House of Representatives would be a good resume builder to that goal. I don’t think Stace can take on the governorship in 2014. Instead I think spending time in the US House with other representatives such as Justin Amash will both strengthen the liberty-wing of the Republican Party in DC and prepare Stace for the highest office in South Dakota. South Dakota needs a governor that can truly counter-balance the progressive-leaning Republican majority legislating in Pierre. Having a person like Stace with veto power at the capital house would serve the residents of South Dakota very well!

Even though this is the path I have in mind I will support Stace no matter what he does. As I said before this is not a part of politics I delve into on a usual basis. I also think that no matter what happens Stace will gain a lot of name recognition in 2014, making him even more formidable in future elections.

I would love to see him in the Senate as well! Of the R’s going against Rounds I think Stace has the best chance. I’m just not sure its the best choice for Stace.
