If Rep Nelson runs for federal office who will be the conscience of the SDGOP in Pierre?

July 13, 2013

cartoon_elephant_silhouetteEarlier this week South Dakota District 19 State Representative Stace Nelson announced the formation of an exploratory committee to run for federal office. I think this is great. Also earlier this week I made the case he should run against Rep Noem for the House seat. But whether he goes for the House or Senate seat I think it would only be a win for the liberty movement in DC. However by going for federal office there is one big loss for South Dakota: Rep Nelson will no longer be in Pierre as a legislator. That is true whether he wins a federal seat or not.

Currently I see Stace Nelson as the loud-spoken conscience of the SDGOP in Pierre. He has no problem telling his fellow Republican legislatures when they are running completely out-of-bounds of the Party Platform. Sadly the party leadership has not taken these opportunities to actually debate and make that case they are doing right; no, instead they attack Rep Nelson and use procedural rules to quiet him. It is only through his charge-ahead attitude that he has been able to become heard and let people outside of Pierre know what actually goes on there.

With it looking quite likely that Stace will run for federal office who can we count on to do the same? I’m not sure if there is anyone in the current legislature that could pull this off the same way Stace does. There are some good conservatives, however they are more soft-spoken and unable to charge ahead the same way Stace does.

I still support Stace in a run for federal office and hope he does run. However I hope we can also find a good SDGOP conscience replacement between now and the election in 2014. If we don’t find a good replacement it is at the detriment of South Dakota citizens.

Dan Kaiser, Lance Russell, & Betty Olson. Will be able to share this roll and do a good job at it. That being said Stace is one of a kind and cannot be completely replaced, but we need Stace in Washington worse than Pierre.

I agree, we need him more in DC than we do in Pierre. I will just miss having him in Pierre. Maybe between Kaiser, Russel & Olson they can work out something like Amash does. He gets messages out about everything the House is trying to do and what steps he is taking to stop them. Its not the same approach as Stace takes, but may have the same effect.

We’re trying to recruit Travis Schaunaman to run in district 3 with Dan Kaiser, that would be one great ticket!

I know of Travis by reputation. That may indeed be a good route.
