Oglala Lakota College Woksape Tipi Academic/Public Library & Archives, Friday, May 16, 2014, 1:00pm until finished is hosting an Open Political Forum for South Dakota Congressional, Senatorial and Gubernatorial Candidates at Piya Wiconi Campus.

The topics to be discussed will include but not limited to the following issues XL Pipeline, minimum wage, EB5-Beef Packing Plant, BIA and IHS funding, and Medicaid expansion.

CANDIDATES!!! PINE RIDGE RESERVATION VOTERS WELCOME YOU TO THE LAND OF THE OGLALA….YOUR PRESENCE IS REQUIRED FOR OUR VOTE!!!

May 16 has been selected to allow individuals the opportunity to register to vote and/or change their political affiliation deadline on May 19, 2014 for the primary election on June 3, 2014.

I think it is great such an event has been organized. There are too few events of this type in the state. Establishment politicians tend to avoid these events. But their absence will be noted by those in attendance (as the statement above says: your presence is required for our vote).

For those unable to attend in person the event will be live-streamed KILI Radio and KOLC TV. Those of us planning to attend or listen to the event from the east side of the state should take note the event is at 1:00 pm Mountain Time. That means 2:00 pm for those of us east of the river.

Below is the list of candidates that were invited, along with their answer about attending this open forum. I will update the status of those attending if  hear of any more confirmations/declines.

You can bet Indian Country will be tuning in. It’s good that it will be live-steamed for everybody to see. I believe this is first ever candidate debate held on a reservation in the history of SD. To bad the establishment candidates declined.

I hope this can become the first in a series of events that happen every election cycle. That would be great!

  2. May 13, 2014 at 10:15 am

Ken, you can add Jason Ravnsborg to the list. He just committed. Now Cheyenne River is talking about hosting a debate! That’s good news. Native Americans are dealing with the same issues of corruption as we are. They want to talk.

    • May 13, 2014 at 10:30 am

Thats great. I figured Jason would make it. He actually has gone out of his way to speak with Native American voters.

My name is Tanya Nelson CP. I am full blooded Sioux from the Winnipeg Canada Tribe; shall I call these individuals? I worked at Children’s Inn for Daugarrd in 2004….WHY DID HE DECLINE!?!?!?!

  4. May 13, 2014 at 11:17 am

Just emailed his campaign…We will see. I will call too.

    • May 13, 2014 at 11:34 am

I hope you get a reply. If you get one please let us know! The voters deserve to know why the invitation was declined!

  6. May 13, 2014 at 2:27 pm

hey there….just had a decline from weiland as he has previous engagements….so need i repeat myself..???….sigh…

    • May 13, 2014 at 2:29 pm

I would think they would try to provide some sort of representation.

    • May 13, 2014 at 3:28 pm

Somone on Facebook just mentioned Skype. Would it possible for Pressler or others unable to attend to do a Skype session. It would still likely be noted by voters as an absence. But it might be worth looking at.

      • May 13, 2014 at 5:27 pm

….good idea….we did talk about last week …will see what we can figure out….be in touch!!!!…
