Senate Local Government has three bills on Weds Feb 4

February 3, 2015

rip-tombstone-hiOn Wednesday, February 4th, at 7:45 AM the SD Senate Local Government committee will take on 3 bills.

SB 64 – SoDakLiberty PostsRevise certain provisions regarding the registration of business names.

This was deferred from the Jan 21 meeting. Here are my notes prior to that meeting:

The SD Secretary of State (SOS) asked for this bill. This bill requires non-profit companies to file a fictitious name statement with the state just like for-profit companies have to. Actually this change makes sense. I can’t think of why non-profits would have been treated different in this case.

SB 111 – SoDakLiberty Posts – Repeal the provision that invalidates absentee ballots cast by voters who died before the date of the election.

Sen Scott Parsley (D, Dist 8) and Rep Mathew Wollmann (R, Dist 8) are the prime sponsors of this bill. I don’t really see the purpose of this bill. Election day is election day. I already think SD over-uses early voting. I don’t see a problem with the current law that states if you are not alive on election day that your vote won’t count.

SB 116 – SoDakLiberty Posts – Authorize the county coroner to charge a fee for certain autopsy reports.

Sen Jeff Monroe (R, Dist 24) and Rep Dan Kaiser (R, Dist 3) are the prime sponsors of this bill. This bill allows the coroner’s office to charge the cost of preparing a copy of an autopsy report. Normally I would balk at a new fee, but this one seems to be getting the coroner’s office to recoup costs of copying like other government entities are able to.
