Senate Health and Human Services committee has 2 bills on Fri Feb 20

February 20, 2015

molumen-pregnancy-silhouet-1On Friday, February 20th, at 10:00 AM the SD Senate Health and Human Services committee will take on 2 bills.

HB 1155 – SoDakLiberty PostsRequire that information be provided to a pregnant mother whose child tests positive for Down syndrome.

Rep Isaac Latterell (R, Dist 6) and Sen Jenna Haggar (R, Dist 10) are the prime sponsors. This bill passed House State Affairs 10-1 and the House floor 52-15. I don’t like this bill. It gets in the middle of the doctor/patient relationship. In the end this bill appears to be intended to stop abortions that are due to Down syndrome. I don’t think it will do that. All it will do is get the state more involved with the doctor/patient relationship.

BILLS FOR POSSIBLE ACTION WHICH HAVE HAD PRIOR HEARING.

HB 1079 – SoDakLiberty PostsRevise the deadline for the Department of Health’s annual report regarding abortions.

Rep Jim Stalzer (R, Dist 11) and Sen Phil Jensen – (R, Dist 33) are the prime sponsors. This bill passed the House Health and Human Services committee 13-0 and the House floor 67-2. It was tabled in this committee on Feb 9 after failing to pass with a vote of 3-2. On Feb 11 it was removed from the table.

Here is what I said about the bill in a post a couple of days ago:

I wasn’t sure about this bill before, but it seemed reasonable to provide some sort of deadline. But now that I know many of the sponsors want to use this data simply for making anti-abortion legislation I think it would be a good time for this bill to die. It just seems too much like this bill has politically motivated reasons, as opposed to public health reasoning…
